Got a chance this summer to do a pop up trade show booth for Ohio State Athletic Departments ticket sales group.

While they don't have much trouble selling tickets for football all the other mens and ladies sports all have to market like crazy to sell tickets and ticket packages to their games.

The booth will be set up somewhere in the Schott every home basketball game and they'll have information and prices for tickets to all of OSU's sports.


Added a few more of the panes

The booth itself is a 10' curved pop up that sets up in about 10 minutes. It includes lights and a travel case for ease of transport. Comes with a lifetime warranty.

The graphics were designed by an OSU graphics designer and they look great.

McGraw Hill Publishing at Polaris and I-71 was in the midst of a renovation of their associate's cafeteria and meeting area and wanted to tie everything together with a mural of the Columbus skyline. They had a photographer take the skyline you see above. They ran the image through a Photoshop graphics program that converted the picture to an outline.

The custom mural you see here is 34' wide x 7'8" high and is produced out of premium black

SIGNARAMA Worthington took the photo and ran it though a program that took the outline and plotted it and cut it out of 48" wide rolls of premium black vinyl. There were a total of 10 panels to do the job.

Then the fun began...it took about 20 hours of weeding or picking out the cut out image from the panels of solid black vinyl to get the image you see here.

Fitting and pre-installation prep took about another 2-3 hours and then installation. Two people got it all installed in about 61/2 hours.

Basic Sign Design 5 Mistakes to Avoid for your Next Professional Business Sign

Your sign is your image, your silent salesman, for a small business that depends on local trafffic-especially one that's new-about the best advertising and marketing investment you can make. You want it to be attractive, eye catching and readable.

1. Business card as your sign design...Problem: your potential customers are looking for the message on your sign. Too much information and a lot of text will be hard to read. Less is typically best.

Solution-pick the three most important elements of your card. Usually 1. your name 2. your tagline 3. your phone number or web address

2. Light colors on light colors or dark with dark...Problem: contrasting colors- avoid light colors on light colors...yellow on white--red on purple etc.

Solution: Outline the yellow in a contrasting color gray outlined by scarlet on a white background will show well. Yellow outlined by forest green the same. Or go for a dark background like yellow on blue or burgundy.

3. Rework or refurbish an old sign...Problem: i a 10 year old plywood sign that's showing it's age. Even repainting it and adding new letters and it's still a 10 year old plywood sign. The stuff just doesn't wear well.

Solution: consider a smaller permanent sign or PVC sign. Go for something simple and possibly even smaller. A professional sign will showcase your company and products better and you'll look a lot better image wise. Even covering with a properly made banner that's tightly stretched and attached will look better than a reworked hunk of plywood.

4. Standard magnets instead of permanent vehicle graphics...Problem: Vehicle graphics at 12" x 24" on the side of your van or SUV look like a peanut on an elephant's butt! Dinky and miss-placed. On top of that they can come off if you're not careful or put them on a dirty surface.

Solution-permanent vehicle lettering. For not much more you can get something larger, better looking and more readable to people passing by at 55 mph. Get your company vehicles to pay back...not pay out. Get your gas money back and put the vehicles to work.

5. Banners as permanent signs...Problem: the price is right but in the long run it won't reflect well on your business if your "sign" is of a temporary nature. Banners are perceived as temporary and clients will think of you as temporary too.

Solution--invest in a sign. There's all kinds of options and price points available. For credit worthy you can even lease them. How about a $10,000 sign for about $275.00/month. $10,000 will get you a very substantial sign to bring in lots of business.

Car lettering is one of the best ways to get your company truck, van, SUV, car or trailer noticed and get you more business. While vehicle wraps are the "glory boys" of what's going on out there and what's getting all the press and attention truck lettering and car letters are still the "bread and butter" of most small business and corporate fleets. Ever walk by a vehicle with letters that have cracked and have dark outlines around the edges of the solid vinyl letters? They used intermediate vinyl which is why we won't.

Window Graphics for St Brigids Catholic Church

Thanks to Kent Smith and soon-to-be Eagle Scout and son Connor for the referral to do the window graphics at St. Brigids Catholic Church, Dublin, Ohio.

St. Brigids is undergoing a big expansion to their worship area, expanding it by 50%. While it closes down for the construction Mass has been moved to the gym at the back of St. Brigid's school. They decided they wanted to dress up the side of the school everyone will pass by when walking by it when heading to Mass in the back of the building. This was the portion of the original horse stalls that the church was first started in.

Church leaders and members came up with a plan to add graphics to doors and windows on the side of the building that will mirror window treatments on the rest of the building. In addition landscaping was added a an integral part of the improvements.

When church leaders were looking for someone to organize and spearhead the operation they spoke with parish member Kent Smith who's oldest son had done a similar project as part of earning his Eagle Scout status.

Just so happens that younger son Connor, a sophomore at Dublin Coffman H.S. is close to earning his Eagle Scout status and needed a major community service project as part of his becoming an Eagle Scout. Since big brother is now at University of Cincinnati studying architecture and can't do the job dad kind of "volunteered" young Connor.

Kent and Connor held a series of meetings with church leaders and planners to review plans and coordinate the project and budget. Kent and Connor were referred to SIGN A RAMA Worthington by Dan G. at Solar Solutions in Westerville.

We added the cross in all the windows and the doors. In the door we added frosted vinyl and a protective laminate in the back of the graphics to protect the vinyl work from kids school bags and kicks.

Kent said two months later he's still hearing compliments on the way the job turned out. The vinyl graphics, the landscaping and the repainting of the trim around the windows took something that was pretty blah and unremarkable and for minimal dollars turned it into something that's nice and distinctive.

And...I've been invited to Connor's Eagle Scout ceremony. Having never been to one I'm really looking forward to it. He's a couple of badges away so shouldn't be long. It was truly a pleasure working with Kent, Stacey and Connor Smith on this project.

Tips For Full Color Banners Columbus Ohio

5 STEPS TO AN OUTSTANDING BANNER

The "Old Days" of single color banners isn't dead and gone-there's still a place for something in one or two colors and basic. However, to really get it done full color banners are your best bet. Prices have come down and full color banners can be your best value too. Volume prices can be as low as $2.50/s.f. for fully finished banners in full near photo quality colors.

So what goes into a great banner? Check out these 5 traits and see if you can come up with a great look that tells your message-

1. Characters/Fonts...the font you use is the starting point to a great banner. First, one or two font styles at most. Depending on the message and circumstances different fonts can dramatically increase the chances of your message getting through and memorable or be a distraction and mess up your message. Example...got a western theme for your banner? There's a number of western themed fonts that will reinforce your message.

2. Contrast...beware of like colors of graphics and backgrounds. For example red letters on a blue background will blend together and be hard to read, especially in low light conditions. However, red and blue are common corporate colors so add a white outline to the red letters and they'll pop off the blue background and read easily in any light.

If you've got a yellow wall the banner is going to be hung on make sure the background of the banner is a color that will contrast with the yellow wall. i.e. don't put up a banner with a light or yellow color background on a yellow wall. At minimum add a black or dark border around the banner to set it off from the wall.

4. Banner Size...you don't want a banner that's too small for the space. Having a big building and too small a banner and it's lost to people driving or walking by. The expression I use all the time is it's kind of like a peanut on an elephant's butt! Get too far and you pretty much don't see it. Or you have an 8 foot space and you make a 9' banner and it wraps around the building corners. Looks bad, hard to read, and reflects poorly on your business. Either case, money spent isn't as effective as it could/should be.

4. Letter Size-match the size of the banner to the size of the space and distance from the viewing public. You need about 1" of height for every 10' of viewing distance. So a banner that you want seen 100' off the road needs letters that are about 10" tall. You also need space between lines for easy viewing.

5. Materials-some "low price leaders" produce banners with 10 oz materials or mild inks that don't hold up well over time and under the sun. They tear easily, scratch easily and fade quickly. We've done banners that have been up for upwards of five years and still tell the message.

Properly made and finished your banners can be useful for years and years. Fold them up, put them away until next time and increase their value and usefulness.

BONUS STEP # 6

6. Digital Graphics and Backgrounds...in printing digital banners the sky is the limit. You're only constraint is your imagination and the need to be effective. Pictures, illustrations, background graphics and fonts can all be combined to maximize your visual impact and make a great money making banner.

Carved and Routed Signs for Columbus OH

We do a lot of custom routed signs on a wholesale basis for other sign shops here in Columbus Ohio. We're one of the few shops that has the in house capacity to do these types of carved signs.

Here's a few pictures of two of our more recent projects for other companies. One is for a restaurant/lounge type spot somewhere on the East side of columbus. It involved routing the back panel and separate dimensional letters and border. We then created a pattern, applied the letters using silicone and "blind studs" to hold them on and the decorative border. This was all painted with our automotive quality spray system. This is a two step system using the same acrylic-polyurethane paints body shops use to paint cars and bumpers. This carries a five year warranty against peeling, cracking etc.

The other sign is much more intricate and will ultimately be hand painted by the sign company that bought it from us. It is a part of a much larger sign which they plan to install soon. These signs give you and idea of the type of carved and routed signs we're capable of here at SIGN A RAMA Worthington/Columbus.

Red Cross Golf Outing is a Blast!

Sign A Rama Worthington once again had the privledge to participate in the 22nd annal Red Cross Golf Classic at Ohio State's Golf Club's Scarlet and Grey course.

We donate all the tee sponsor signs and sponsor banners the event uses every year. We've donated over $10,350 worth of signs in the past four outings. This is money they would have had to spend that can now go towards helping families in the Greater Columbus area when a disaster like a flood or fire strike.

The Classic reached it's goal to raise over $240,ooo again this year for the Disaster Services Division of the American Red Cross here in Columbus. Approximately 170 golfers played in this year's Classic and had a great time. Even the rain delay provided a nice little relief from the summer's hot sun with some fellowship and "catching up" during our break in the clubhouse.

Our foursome included Ohio State basketball great, former team captain and Big 10 Champion Ron Stokes. Ron is also the analyst for all Buckeye Mens basketball games on the Buckeye Basketball Network. Ron's business, 3 Leaf Productions is a leading provider of print services, promotional products and fulfillment services for client companies. Rounded out with Andy Yates and my son Brad Mayer who works with me at the store. It's always a great time to get away from the store and we look forward to it every year. Routed Signs and Carved Signs for Columbus OH

Sign A Rama is a Columbus sign company that makes Carved Signs and Routed Signs for our direct buy retail clients and we do wholesale sign work for other sign companies in the Mid Ohio and Mid West sign companies.

We got a call from a local sign company that was looking for a routed sign for a local lounge. Not sure exactly where but I think the Heritage Lounge is somewhere on the east side of Columbus, Ohio.

When we fabricate routed signs on our 4' x 8' cnc machine there are a number of steps that go into the process that make it the quality product a sign company puts up on the building.

While most signs we produce are on PVC, a petroleum based product, we can also make signs out of cedar, FoamCo re, acrylic, DuraBond, and sign blanks out of MDO, plywood, AlumaLite and more.

Here's the normal steps:

1. Sand and clean up all the sand dust
2. Primer Coat
3. Paint

We paint with an two part paint product used in automotive body shops. This allows us to put a five year warranty on the paint against peeling, cracking or delamination. This is the "good stuff"-not something off the shelf at Home Depot some sometimes use.

Monument Signs for Columbus OH

Our thanks to the "sign committee" at the Devonshire subdivision in Columbus, OH for purchasing their monument sign or subdivision entry sign from us here at Sign A Rama Columbus-Worthington.

They had an old, worn out looking sign that was estimated to be the original sign from when the subdivision was built about 30 or so years ago. Brad from our shop met with the committee chairman to go over the details, size, space, desired look and budget.

We gave them several proposals of which you see the final look here on the blog. They helped with demolition and some of the concrete work so we could bolt in to the structure. We cut and painted the letters here in the shop. Painted them with our automotive quality paint system so they won't fade or peel two years from now. Attached them and went to work and installed the sign. While we were working neighbors were stopping to chat and look at their new sign monument sign...which they loved.

Big Truck Wraps & Grand Graphics

Got a big boy in last week for a truck wrap. 24' x 8. Wanted truck graphics and truck lettering in a BIG Way!

Client had a basic design and layout in mind and we went with it and then tweaked it on the run when we did the second side.

Rains and more rains and more rains caused some delays and problems getting things done. Finally client had a grand idea...a huge tarp and some boards and we're working "inside" and out of the rain. Worked great!

That was until the breeze kicked up and started blowing like crazy. Our designer Jason had his hands on one side and the tarp caught the wind and lifted him off the ground by about two feet! Way to hang in and hang on Jason.

That's when we brought the company pickup (see picture) and tied the tarp down with 1/4" rope. That worked fine and kept things in place so they could work untill...

The SUN came out! Went from dry and pleasant to HOT and sauna like. Caused a few problems as the vinyl got overheated and a bit stretchey. Took the tarp off and turned the truck side we were working on and into the shade to take care of that little issue.

Weather was a problem and still have to do the panel over the cab but the truck looks fabulous and very easy to see.

Sparkle Clean has turned to the truck wrap as a new, best methods way to advertise. Owner Eric explained to me that often when one house on a street has a roof mold problem several do. He feels they've been missing huge opportunities as neighbors pass by and he's not displaying his name and message.

It won't be a problem any more! Graphics are outstanding. On the big pictures you can see the knobs on the grill on the porch. That's attention to details!

Car Wraps for Columbus Oh!

Rite Rugs came to us for a car wraps quote for their Columbus OH based sales guy and his company car. We were close but other shop could do it a bit sooner and for a bit less. So they used another shop. After sending back TWO wraps they called us to do the job. The other company couldn't hit colors or clarity of image. Twice they wrapped it and twice they made them take it all off.

Then they called us...

We did their HHR, which is one of the 3 toughest vehicles there are to wrap.

And we found out just how tough they are to wrap! We took longer to do than what we'd told our client but the results are worth it!

Rite Rug was extremely pleased with the result. I delivered it and I parked it near the associates entrance. People were coming into the office and I could hear them talking to my contact about how sharp the wrap looked.

Got to drive back in the car with the salesman who will be driving the car around as his company car... one of the "Call Mr Edwards!!!" guys.

He's pleased as punch, loves the new look...great colors and detail.

Kick Butt Vehicle Graphics

The pressure was really on! Got a call from Deb Confer, she and her husband run XCel Martial Arts in Westerville, OH. Deb is a 4th degree black belt in Karate, her husband is who knows how high, and even their Jr in high school daughter is 4th degree black belt also.

When they called about vehicle graphics I quickly decided I really didn't want to face the consequences of an angry 4th degree black belt when she didn't like her vehicle graphics job! Just kiddin'...she was great to work with.

Came to us with the most basic plan of what she wanted on the truck. Said if you have any suggestions for fonts and graphics feel free to make them. We did...re-did the kicking man on the side, relocated a few things, changed fonts and added the back window perf which she really loves.

All in all a great looking truck and graphics package and a very pleased client.

PS...Ran into Jerry Yang last night at Pacific Fusion in Dublin, OH. See an earlier blog post for the sign in his restaurant. Said he's gotten several comments on the sign and two of his contractors wanted to know who did it...really liked and would want to contact us in the future for possible projects. Haven't heard from them yet but hope to soon. I'll pat my crew on the back-it does look great and picture on the site doesn't do it justice. Colors are great and really pop off the wall.

Many thanks to Buckeye Restoration for bring in their third truck for a wrap at Sign A Rama Worthington.

The layout was designed by Ron Vogel at Trinity Designs in Commercial Point, OH. Ron is an extremely talented designer who has done design work for a number of local businesses and national ones as well.

We used 3M ControlTac Digital media and over laminate for protection from minor scratches and added UV protection. While Buckeye's trucks didn't quite fit into the "Turn Your Beater into a Heater" catagory from our website -www.signaramacolumbus.com-these were used trucks and were showing some wear. The graphics and wrap made them look 100% better than before, and brings them business.

They're parked in front of clients homes and houses all day. A 24/7 billboard saying "This is who we use to do our work...you should too"

Car Wraps and Vehicle Graphics that Work!

We did this vehicle graphics job over a month ago and have it on our web site...www.signaramacolumbus.com on the vehicle graphics page under the headline..."'Turn Your Beater into a Heater".
The idea is take an old beater truck and put your graphics on it. Park it out in your parking lot and you've got another big sign for your business without all the regulations. What you can get is much bigger than any sign code would generally allow.

The other part to the equation is you can take an old beater truck, van , trailer or SUV and cover up a lot of wear and tear with graphics. This was truly an old beat up piece of junk ex UHaul truck that had been through the mill. While we can't cover up the beat in drivers door we covered up the box and what was a mess of old graphics and gashes. The sign works and they love it. It's brought them business and people have noticed. We got a referral from another small business that saw it and considered doing it for his old beater truck as well. (Hasn't decided yet I'm sorry to say.)

Cool Looking Wall Sign

Thanks to Jerry Yang and his new restaurant, soon to be a chain, Pacific Fusion in Dublin.

With a healthy style Pacific Rim influenced food. Haven't had a chance to go there yet. Going to go there Saturday and give it a shot. Casual dining, modest prices, pick your own veggies if you want to change them up a bit. Sounds great. Was in there when they were doing some test cooking and it smelled great! They're only about three minutes from our house so we're going to give it a shot.

Jerry found us on Google and was looking for someone who could get them a custom wall sign using their logo and colors and get it in a hurry. We were in a position to get it done. With our in house routing and painting we were able to accommodate Jerry and Pacific Rim.

The sign was routed from 1/2" PVC which was sanded, primed and painted per Pacific Rims color scheme. The sign looks great and Jerry is very happy with the results.
